CMC shows up for manchester's most vulnerable at Beech Street Shelter
Catholic Medical Center (CMC), part of the HCA Healthcare family, spent time Friday, December 19 volunteering at the Beech Street Shelter, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to protecting Manchester’s most medically fragile and aging residents during the heart of the Christmas season.
At a time of year when many reflect on generosity, compassion and caring for one another, CMC’s presence at the shelter underscores the true meaning of the season. Earlier this year, CMC joined with other local hospitals in making a significant financial contribution to ensure the Beech Street Shelter could remain open through February 2026. This support helped prevent the displacement of dozens of vulnerable individuals and ensured continuity of care during the coldest and most dangerous months of the year.
Friday’s volunteer effort reflects a core belief shared across HCA Healthcare: the Christmas season is not only about giving — it’s about showing up. CMC staff spent some time setting up and serving lunch to around fifty individuals.
“Last night, I attended the Homeless Persons Vigil — a powerful reminder of the lives we’ve already lost in our community,” said CMC CEO John Skevington. “And as I stood there, I couldn’t help but think: without the Beech Street Shelter, there would be more names on that list next year. This shelter saves lives.
During the Christmas season, we’re reminded more than ever of our calling to provide health, healing and hope to everyone who seeks our care. That’s why we’re here today — not just as donors, but as partners who show up. As part of HCA Healthcare, we believe compassion is something you demonstrate, not just something you fund. We’re proud to support this work, and even prouder to stand alongside the people who make it possible every day.”
Catholic Medical Center’s mission — to offer health, healing and hope to every person we serve — extends beyond hospital walls. Supporting the Beech Street Shelter aligns with that mission and reflects the values that guide both CMC and HCA Healthcare: dignity, compassion and community partnership.
