Repetition drives excellence: CMC marks 500 open Heart surgeries in 14 Months with HCA Healthcare
Catholic Medical Center (CMC) is proud to announce a major milestone: the completion of its 500th open heart surgery in just 14 months since joining HCA Healthcare on February 1, 2025.
This achievement reflects the continued growth and momentum of CMC’s cardiac program. That progress is being further accelerated through recent investments, including the complete renovation of one of the electrophysiology (EP) labs, allowing the hospital to provide more comprehensive cardiovascular care —from complex open heart surgery to advanced treatment of heart rhythm conditions.
This milestone highlights the exceptional skill, efficiency and collaboration of CMC’s cardiac program, made possible by the expertise of surgeons Dr. Green, Dr. Karpinski and Dr. Westbrook, along with a dedicated team of nurses, clinicians and support staff.
“Completing 500 open heart surgeries in just 14 months speaks to the strength, experience and coordination of our cardiac team,” said John Skevington, CEO of Catholic Medical Center. “CMC remains the busiest and most complex cardiac program in Southern New Hampshire, and that distinction is driven by the trust our patients place in us and the dedication of our teams who are here for them every day. We are proud to continue expanding access to advanced, high-quality heart care close to home.”
CMC’s cardiac program builds on a legacy spanning more than four decades. Founded on the philosophy of CMC’s first president, Dr. Sylvio Dupuis —“find a need and fill it”—the program was established to bring advanced cardiac care closer to home at a time when many patients had to travel to Boston.
Today, CMC has performed more than 26,000 open heart surgeries, evolving into the most comprehensive heart program in Southern New Hampshire and maintaining a resolute commitment to innovation, excellence and compassionate care.
This milestone not only marks a significant achievement since joining HCA Healthcare, but also reflects decades of dedication to meeting the needs of the community where they live and work—and a continued investment in expanding access to high-quality, advanced cardiac care close to home.
