For over 20 years, we’ve been helping patients achieve their weight loss goals and improve their health, growing to become the largest surgical weight loss program in New Hampshire. Our program is accredited by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) and recognized by Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) as a Blue Distinction Center for Bariatric Surgery through their Blue Distinction Specialty Care program. These distinctions reflect our ongoing commitment to providing the highest quality surgical care and outcomes.

Surgical weight loss

At CMC, we offer a range of minimally invasive (laparoscopic) weight loss procedures tailored to your needs, including:

  • Gastric bypass
  • Gastric sleeve
  • Revisional surgery

Choosing the right procedure takes careful consideration. If you’re a candidate, you’ll partner with our experienced, multidisciplinary team – bariatricians, surgeons, advanced practice providers, registered dieticians and exercise physiologists, all with decades of experience in weight management – to develop a personalized plan.

You’re pre-surgical process typically spans six to eight months, during which you’ll receive individualized support every step of the way. Unlike programs that focus solely on surgery, our comprehensive approach prepares you for long-term success before, during and after your procedure.

Weight loss surgery options explained

Gastric bypass

Gastric bypass is a surgical procedure that involves dividing the stomach to create a small pouch. A section of the small intestine is then attached directly to this pouch, allowing food to bypass a portion of the intestine responsible for absorbing calories and nutrients. The smaller pouch helps you feel full sooner and eat less, while the bypassed section can alter hormones that regulate hunger and food cravings. Gastric bypass may alter the hormones that mediate your hunger and food cravings, possibly causing you to feel full sooner and eat less food.

Gastric sleeve

A gastric sleeve surgery (sleeve gastrectomy) involves removing approximately 80% of the stomach. During the procedure, the surgeon reshapes the stomach into a narrow, sleeve-like structure about the size of a small banana. This may significantly reduce stomach capacity while preserving the small intestine’s ability to absorb nutrients.

Revisional surgery

Revisional surgery may be an option for patients who have previously undergone weight loss surgery and experienced complications or insufficient long-term weight loss.

At CMC, we have extensive experience caring for patients with a history of adjustable band placement, including those who developed band-related complications, experienced inadequate weight loss, or regained weight. We frequently treat patients with complications such as strictures, reflux, ulcers or fistulas. In some cases, patients who did not achieve satisfactory results from a sleeve gastrectomy may be candidates for revision to a different weight loss procedure.

Frequently asked questions

We understand that seeking medical care for unmanageable weight gain can lead to many questions. Our compassionate and experienced team is here to provide clear answers and guide you through every step of your care. We’re dedicated to helping you understand your options and feel confident about your treatment journey.

We offer weight loss treatment for anyone with a body mass index (BMI) at or above 25. Your available treatment options depend on your unique condition.
If you have a BMI at or above 30 — or at or above 27 with certain weight-related medical issues, such as hypertension, diabetes or sleep apnea — you may be a candidate for weight loss medication.
You may be a candidate for surgical weight loss if you have a BMI over 40. You might also be a candidate if you have a BMI over 35 with certain weight-related medical issues, such as hypertension, diabetes or sleep apnea.
There are a variety of options available if you do not wish to have surgery, or do not meet the medical criteria for surgery. You may instead choose to enroll in our comprehensive behavioral health program, complete with nutrition education and exercise instruction. We also can prescribe weight loss medications or set you up with a medically supervised meal replacement program.
Yes, if you are new to our area and have previously had bariatric surgery, you can join our program and benefit from our long-term follow-up care. Some restrictions do apply, so please contact us to discuss your situation.
Preoperative weight loss or medical optimization may be required in order for us to safely perform your surgery. We generally do not operate if you weigh over 400 pounds. If you find yourself in this situation, we will work to help you achieve enough preoperative weight loss to have surgery. If we cannot safely perform your surgery and refer you to a larger hospital, we will still provide all of your preoperative and postoperative care.
If you have previously undergone surgery, and either experienced poor weight loss or postoperative weight gain, there are options available to help get you back on track. These may include behavioral treatment and education, weight loss medications or possibly additional surgery.
Absolutely. We believe that continued contact with care team and your peers is essential to maintaining long-term success.
If you have a band and are struggling to maintain weight loss, or have developed other complications, we'll work with you to ensure that your band is properly positioned and functioning. If functional, we help you get the most effect from your band. If the band is no longer working, we can remove the device and discuss surgical and nonsurgical treatment options for weight loss.
Many insurance plans cover medical weight loss services. Check with your doctor for specific information.
