Catholic Medical Center (CMC), a part of the HCA Healthcare family, is embarking on one of the largest capital investment in its history — nearly $100 million in infrastructure upgrades, facility enhancements and technology improvements. These investments mark a transformative chapter for CMC, strengthening its ability to deliver high-quality care and positioning the hospital for long-term growth.

“With the support of HCA Healthcare, we are able to make lasting healthcare investments that ensure our community has access to the state-of-the-art care and modern facilities for generations to come,” said John Skevington, chief executive officer of CMC. “These updates are critical to continuing CMC’s legacy of excellence and positioning us for future growth. Being part of HCA Healthcare gives us the resources and expertise to grow in ways we could never have achieved alone — all to the benefit of our patients and community.”

At the center of this investment plan is a $43.4 million renovation of CMC’s Central Energy Plant — a vital infrastructure project that will modernize the hospital’s power, heating, and cooling systems. For years, CMC’s facilities team worked tirelessly to extend the life of the aging plant, but a complete overhaul was long overdue. The new system will deliver more reliable and efficient operations while supporting future expansion and innovation for decades to come.

Recently, CMC was the successful bidder in the auction for the lease of the former Rite Aid property at 122 McGregor Street. Currently in a due diligence period, the hospital plans to finalize the purchase once that process is complete. In the meantime, the site is already serving patients and their families by providing additional Emergency Department parking, improving convenience and access to care. CMC is exploring long-term development opportunities for the property to expand patient care in the coming months.

Beyond the Central Energy Plant renovation and the Rite Aid acquisition, CMC has launched an additional $46.5 million in equipment upgrades, facility renovations and patient care enhancements. These include:

  • Nursing Unit refreshes across the Emergency Department, Mom’s Place and patient floors
  • Operating Room modernization, including advanced video integration, new anesthesia machines, orthopedic equipment and surgical lasers
  • New Hybrid Operating Room and Interventional Radiology suite
  • Public space renovations including common areas, restrooms, patient room furniture, and dining facilities
  • Upgrades to imaging and sterile processing equipment
  • Infrastructure improvements to medical office buildings, including HVAC systems, elevators and accessibility

Included in this investment is a previously announced $2.7 million Electrophysiology (EP) Lab renovation featuring state-of-the-art technology for diagnosing and treating heart rhythm disorders. This project is part of CMC’s broader strategy to expand its heart and vascular services as it approaches the 40th anniversary of its nationally recognized heart program. The renovated EP lab is expected to open by the end of the year.

Construction is already underway on several projects, with most expected to be completed within the next two years. CMC will share progress along the way, keeping the community informed as these improvements take shape.
