State-of-the-art surgical suites
The surgery department includes 10 state-of-the-art surgical suites: eight for general surgery and two for cardiac surgery. The addition of a hybrid operating room in 2012 combines the traditional operating room with the best imaging and cardiac catheterization equipment. Having multiple technologies in the same operating room fosters innovative surgical approaches that can improve patient outcomes.
Our hybrid operating room can be used either for minimally invasive or open surgery. Through real-time imaging, a patient’s anatomy can be evaluated as necessary during the surgical procedure. The “hybrid” concept comes from combining features of an operating room and an interventional suite. The hybrid-OR (hybrid-OR) can also be used by an interdisciplinary team, leading to increased flexibility and efficiency of workflow.
We are dedicated to delivering the highest standards of care to meet all your surgical needs.
Neurosurgery
Neurosurgery, or neurological surgery, includes the diagnosis, surgical treatment and rehabilitation of disorders that affect any portion of the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and cerebrovascular system.
We are proud to offer this level of expertise in our community in partnership with New Hampshire NeuroSpine Institute, which provides 24/7 coverage at the hospital.
In addition, neurosurgery at CMC is part of our award-winning stroke program, neurosurgery allows us to provide comprehensive stroke care to our patients.
Colonoscopy and endoscopy
Colonoscopy and endoscopy are safe, effective tools that gastrointestinal (GI) doctors use to examine an individual from the inside of the body. We are dedicated to providing the highest standards of care in performing both inpatient and outpatient endoscopy services, including diagnostic and therapeutic procedures that treat a variety of conditions associated with the GI (digestive) tract, as well as the respiratory system.
Minimally invasive surgical techniques
Many procedures can be performed through minimally invasive techniques, if appropriate for the patient. We are one of the first hospitals in the country to use minimally invasive, robotic-assisted surgery techniques with an advanced robotic surgical system, and now have two of these robots.
About minimally invasive surgery
Laparoscopic, also called minimally invasive surgery or robotic surgery is considered is a type of surgery that uses special instruments designed to decrease the size of incisions and reduce damage to body tissue. This kind of minimally invasive surgery uses a scope that allows surgeons to look inside the body without the need for a large incision.
This type of surgery can be used for many procedures including:
- Appendix
- Colon
- Gallbladder
- Hernia
- Thoracic
- Weight loss
Laparoscopic surgery technique
There are several different types of scopes, but they all work in generally the same way. They consist of a long, thin tube with a tiny camera and a light on the end. The camera sends pictures from the inside of the body to a TV screen. The surgeon makes a small incision just big enough for the scope to fit through, as well as smaller incisions for robotic-assisted instruments to fit through. These instruments include clamps, scissors and stitching devices.
Benefits of laparoscopic surgery
Our surgeons use minimally invasive surgery extensively. Potential benefits include less pain and bleeding, shorter recovery time and minimized scarring.
Outpatient surgical care
For outpatients who need or wish to use an ambulatory surgery center for insurance reasons, CMC has a partnership with the Bedford Ambulatory Surgery Center (BASC). Complex surgery will be performed at CMC while outpatients may have procedures at either BASC or CMC.
Designed to meet patient and family needs
If you are having surgery, you will be escorted to a preoperative ambulatory area where your family may join you prior to surgery. Recovery from surgery takes place in a postoperative care area. Our family waiting room has a quiet area and another area with a television, both with wireless internet service and a charging station for your mobile devices. A private consultation room allows physicians to talk to families privately following surgery. Our surgical suites are in close proximity to the emergency room, intensive care unit and heliport for emergency situations.
